Migrate Devices from Current Solution

This guide explains how to migrate an AXIS device from its current VMS solution, which used the OAK, to the YourSixOS platform. Since a device’s OAK can only be registered to one cloud platform at a time, any device with a previously registered OAK must first be removed from the old solution and reset before it can be registered with YourSixOS. The following steps will cover this process.

Steps to Migrate an AXIS Device from an Existing VMS (Using OAK) to YourSixOS

1. Scan the Network to Locate Devices
To identify the devices currently connected to the network, use an IP scanning tool. Two options are available:

    • AXIS IP Utility:
Scans the network and detects only AXIS devices. This tool must be downloaded and installed on a PC.
      Download AXIS IP Utility

    • Advanced IP Scanner:
Scans the network for all connected devices. This tool can be run as a one-time file without installation.
      Download Advanced IP Scanner
        • Click the green Free Download button.
        • Save the file when prompted, then open it to run the scan.
        • After scanning, filter or search for “AXIS” to locate the AXIS hardware.

2. Access the Devices’ Interface
Once you’ve identified the devices:

    • Document the IP addresses of each device.
    • Open a Chrome browser and enter the device’s IP address to access its web interface.
    • You’ll need the device’s username and password. If the login credentials are unknown, a hard factory reset will be required. For precise steps to factory reset a device, please refer to the device’s user manual at help.axis.com and check the Troubleshooting section:
        1. Go to the device’s physical location.
        2. Remove power from the device.
        3. Press and hold the reset button while restoring power.
        4. Continue holding the reset button for 45 seconds, then release.
        5. Wait approximately 3 minutes for the device to reboot.
        6. Rescan the network to find the device’s new IP address.

Note: If the device was previously on a static IP network, it will revert to DHCP after a factory reset.

3. Update Device Firmware
After accessing the device, upgrade the device to the latest supported firmware version.

    • In order to update the firmware, navigate to the Maintenance section of the device interface and locate the AXIS OS upgrade section.
    • YourSix recommends using the latest LTS firmware track. For more details refer to the YourSixOS Device Support page to verify the correct firmware: Device Support – YourSixOS
    • For additional assistance updating firmware, contact AXIS Communications support: AXIS Support Contact

4. Retrieve the Serial Number (S/N) and Owner Authentication Key (OAK)
Once on the latest firmware:

    • Within the device interface, navigate to: System > Network tab > Scroll to the bottom of the page.
    • Locate the Serial Number and Owner Authentication Key (OAK).
    • Set the Cloud Connection setting to “Always” and save.

Note: The location of the OAK and Cloud Connection settings may vary based on the device’s firmware version.

5. Add the Device to YourSixOS
In YourSixOS:

    • Navigate to Configuration > Devices tab > Click the Add icon.
    • Along the top of the screen complete the general configuration settings:
        • Cloud retention
        • Edge retention
        • Event retention (event retention should match edge retention)
    • Enter the following:
        • Device Name
        • MAC Address/Serial Number (S/N)
        • Owner Authentication Key (OAK)

6. Additional Steps for Devices Registered to Another VMS
If the device is currently registered to another cloud solution:

    • Use the previous VMS to gain direct access to the device.
    • Remove (delete) the device from the old VMS.
    • Immediately navigate to the Maintenance Page on the AXIS device.
        • Use the Factory Restore option to unregister it from the old solution.
        • After clicking Restore, be ready to add the device to YourSixOS immediately (preferably using a second monitor).
        • Upon successful addition, you will see a “successfully added” message.

Important: When migrating devices remotely, this process must be performed individually—multiple devices cannot be migrated simultaneously unless onsite.

7. Configure the Device in YourSixOS
After the device is successfully added:
